While this is often the topic of fictional works, actual spiritual possession is fairly uncommon. And on top of that, a spiritual kidnapping like that of poor Arthur is nearly unheard of. This is because, even for the mildest case of possession, the fates must be aligned just perfectly. First, the victim must be in a place of great spiritual power, where the rift between the physical and astral planes is thin and permeable. Next, the spirit must have the motivation with which to possess this victim, and the tremendous force of will needed to dominate their spirit. This processes would be aided if the victim had somehow contacted a potential tether for the spirit, but the likeliness of all of these events lining up is above improbable.

What if he's just run off and all this ghost stuff is his way of putting everyone off the scent?
How was he doing before he disappeared? Failing anything? Bad break up with someone? Did something happen?
Seems like a huge leap to go from, "My friend is missing" to "My friend was kidnapped by ghosts."
How did you get there, Phil?
